Gearbox trouble is the repair people put off longest, because they assume the worst and the worst is expensive. It often is not. A crunch going into second can be worn synchros, a tired clutch, or oil that has not been changed in ten years, and those are three very different bills.
We look at it first and tell you which one it is before anything comes apart. Manual and automatic, cars and vans.

Questions we get asked
It crunches going into second. Is the gearbox finished?
Usually not. A crunch into one particular gear is most often a worn synchro or a clutch that is not fully releasing, and neither means a new gearbox. Get it looked at before you assume the worst.
How much is a new gearbox?
It depends completely on the car, and on whether you actually need one. That is why there is no number on this page: we would rather look at it and quote honestly than publish a figure to get you through the door.
Do you do automatics?
Yes. Ring us with the registration and tell us what it is doing.
Do you do MOTs?
No. We are not an MOT test station, so we cannot do the test itself. What we do is everything a car fails on, and everything that comes up as an advisory: brakes, tyres, suspension, exhausts, corrosion and welding. Bring us the failure sheet and we will tell you what it costs to put right.
